The Big Redesign

It has finally happened, I have got round to giving this tired old blog a much needed face-lift. It has been many months in the pipeline and as part of the first birthday celebrations, I put my head down and started typing. The most difficult part of it all has been the conditional elements and I still haven't quite got those sorted.

I realised a little mistake after I had applied the template that because of the new sidebar (and despite the increased overall page width) the content area was too small for videos and images. As such, I wanted the sidebar to appear solely on the main page and not on the individual post pages. That bit was much easier than the next part however because although the sidebar was no longer visible, there was still a large gap where it had been.

The width of the left hand side is dynamically calculated based on the width of the sidebar which hadn't changed. I tried all sorts to get it to work until I eventually came across some sort of solution. I have a few more tweaks to apply and I may reduce the overall width of the post pages a little bit. Either that or I shall just have to start writing more because the paragraphs look a little bit thin on the ground when spread over such a large area.

I also have very sad news today. My old TV which belonged to my dad and was purchased when he was at university has been sent to the tip. It cannot cope with the modern age that is digital, it doesn't even have a remote control. It has however, lasted almost 40 years of good service and copes beautifully when moving about a lot. I have no idea how to tune my other TV and am not sure it is possible any more since the vastly complicated remote went missing. With this one, all that was needed was a screwdriver and some eyes - the good old manual way. It even had a handle built into the top, how many TVs have that these days? I've wouldn't usually have such an emotional attachment to an electrical device - especially one with such limited capabilities - but this has stood out as a superb piece of technology. It has stood the test of time and works as well today as it did when it was new. Goodbye old friend.
