A Longer Than Expected Day

I offered to come in this morning to continue fixing the lights as we had quite a few left to do before our Saturday deadline. Sunday is a special day because of the Tramlines gig happening in the Octagon. A big external event means that everything has to be perfect. Any small slips can seriously damage the reputation of the venue and can have a huge impact on future bookings.

As a result of this, the technical manager decided that it would be best for us to stop servicing them until after the event just in case any of them came out of the process in a worse state than they went in. This has happened a couple of times - not on my watch I might add - but understandably, if they are needed and working then it is better to wait until such a time as they are not needed with such urgency.

I was then persuaded to work tonight due mainly to my total inability to say no. Sometimes I can come up with really lame excuses but most of the time my good natured side gets the better of me and I accept. I didn't have any plans for tonight anyway but I normally like to know these things in advance. I ended up staying in the union from 12:30pm until nearly 5am, the longest stretch I think I have ever done. It was quite nice in a way and I didn't have to walk home. I even got a food voucher for the work I had already done in the morning so I didn't go too hungry either.

I also remembered to take a photo of my lasers as well. There isn't much to see because it was in the smaller venue where there are stricter limitations on what you can and can't do within the safe limits. The only reason I had my camera with me was to avoid the problem of remembering which parts go where on the lights. Pictures are invaluable in these cases because you can see exactly what it should / did like like.
