Just as I'd finally caught up with my blog posts, I start working again and thus it all goes to pot once more. It is going to be a busy few weeks until term ends and the holidays begin and the boredom kicks in in which case I shall be longing for those busy weeks gone by.
Tonight was Space but in the Foundry and Fusion instead of the Octagon because of exams. Juniors like myself are not allowed to fill tech positions in the Octagon at the moment. Having had very little training in there we would require almost constant supervision during the set up and so it isn't really worth it. Because we were in the familiar surroundings of the Foundry and Fusion however, we were allowed to and so I took the opportunity to take control of the lighting.
The initial set up was quite difficult because I had no idea before the event as to what the setup was going to be like. With most events, you know the stage positions etc so that you can plan in advance what you want to put where. I ended up making use of the huge free stage by rigging the lights in awkward places to cable. I then spent a good couple of hours finding sources of power and control to plug them into. It didn't help that there was a giant inflatable space banner covering the two install lights at the back of the stage almost totally obscuring them either.
Bizarrely enough, that actually worked to my advantage in some cases. The banner was translucent so the lights could actually make it glow pretty colours. Not only that but it made a really nice searchlight effect if they moved over the top of it. I wish I'd taken my camera now because this blog could do with some more pictures on it, large chunks of text get boring after a while. I shall endeavour to take some pictures next time I do something interesting!
What is more impressive is that we managed to get packed away and out of the door at about 03:45! Given that a normal Space in the octagon sometimes lasts until 7am you can see why this is such a difference. We did have a fairly large crew however and very little to actually put away but still it was nice to be home whilst it was still dark for once.
