Dr Who?

Today marks the debut episode of the new series of Dr Who with Matt Smith at the helm. Overall impressions... very good. The first episode is always an important one because it has the difficult task of being the introductory episode where all of the characters have to be introduced, the new doctor has to be introduced - not just to us but to himself as well. All in all, with one or two exceptions, I think a good job was done by all.

There were a couple of issues as far as I was concerned however. Firstly the 'trying new foods' scene. Seemed a bit repetitive and frankly unnecessary to be honest although the culmination of him eating fish fingers and custard was perfect. I seem to remember something similar happening last time and so that bit fitted. Secondly - and this applies not just to this episode but to forthcoming episodes by the looks of the trailers - unnecessary inclusion of celebrities / famous faces. In this episode we had Annette Crosby (Victor Meldrew's wife from One Foot in the Grave) and Sir Patrick Moore. It is nice to think that the worlds top scientists and leaders keep in contact with Sir Patrick and it is even nicer that he has been included in an episode but not like that. So far as I know - and correct me if I am wrong here as I'm not an avid viewer of The Sky At Night - he is not an expert on aliens, nor is anyone on this planet frankly. Unless of course they are hiding something from us in which case, there may well be 'alien experts' but I see this as highly unlikely.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and to see what sort of a character this Doctor becomes and how his personality develops. I'm still not convinced about the new assistant - as attractive as she may be - but I'm sure I'll grow to love her as I have done the previous holders of the title 'the Doctor's assistant'.
