The highlight of today has been my friends birthday party and a chance for me not only to leave the house but also to venture out into the scary land that is Broad Street in Birmingham. Despite having lived in the city for most of my life, I have only ever been there twice and only once to a club. Compared to Sheffield, it seems like the scariest place on earth with visions of drunken violence and crime so I have always steered clear of it before, preferring a quiet visit to the pub or other activities outside of the city centre.
In the capable hands of my friends however - who are much more mature about the whole thing and see it as no different to anywhere else - I am happy to go along with the flow of things and usually end up having a good time. Tonight was no exception and I can safely say was the best night out I've had in Birmingham... ever.
It was an evening full of highs and lows none more low than the birthday girl losing her rather expensive mobile phone. It's small things like that that can ruin an evening and I was half expecting tears and an abrupt end to the evening. Thankfully however, things carried on as before and although the mood was significantly dampened we tried to enjoy the rest of the evening. Thankfully, the phone was found before the evening ended thanks to someone handing it in at the bar. My faith in public decency was given a massive boost this evening because of that and has lessened my previous thoughts about Birmingham. Most of the time if you'd lost an expensive phone, you would assume it had been nicked or if someone did find it then they would keep it.
Once that cloud had been lifted, the rest of the evening was much better. The girls I was with were being wooed by the boys and two of them disappeared off with them for the evening which was nice. I was amazed how many people came up to our group to try and score it was genuinely shocking. Being the only boy in this group of girls is a big difference to going out with groups of boys as I am used to and it was funny to see them being turned down one by one. The more persistent few did start to get annoying after a while but I guess that's just one of those things you have to put up with.
