Single of the week time again and I briefly mentioned this lady here when I discussed the long list of nominations for the BBC's Sound of 2010 poll and remarked that she was a "potentially good artist". Since that point, I have been listening to this song on and off and in the last few weeks it has crept up to several times a day at some points. As for her other work, she has fallen down in my estimations with her first single which is a collaboration with Chipmunk - going down the wrong route in my opinion but who knows what else she will do. This song however - whilst not being officially a single, is FREE to download from her website here so under my self imposed rules, it qualifies. It turns out that my initial thoughts on the derivation of her name being attributed to the character from ZZZap! were spot on according Wikipedia although there is no mention of it on her Last.fm profile which you can see here.
The tune is really catchy and it is a brilliant pop song. Her voice is what I would describe as unique and very 'young' sounding. Somehow the music industry is starting to get the hang of making really good pop songs again which is brilliant news because there has been a long period of artists who all though they were too 'cool' for pop and as a result of this, there has been a 'pop vacuum' for the last decade. I know music has to have its decades with a certain genre ruling them, pop was the 80's, manufactured bands were the 90's, black music dominated the noughties and sadly that seems unlikely to change for this decade either but because of the freedom that the internet has given us, in the second half of the noughties we saw a surge of independents releasing music and previously unheard of artists finding themselves in the top 40 through downloads alone. So at least we now have some choice with what we listen to and I think that this period of music business may die out very soon - and that can only be a good thing.
