Today the long list of candidates for the BBC's sound of 2010 were released here. Last years top ten have gone on to have great success and a lot of them have gained a permanent place in my music library and in my all time favourite artists. La Roux, Little Boots, Passion Pit, Florence & The Machine, White Lies and VV Brown have all made superb records this year and are amongst some of my most listened to artists. High hopes for this year then and already a few familiar names.
Ellie Goulding is probably one of the most well known in there after her hit Under the Sheets which made it onto the Radio 1 playlist and then Owl City who in the last week has had a great deal of publicity after being completely ignored in the UK after a great deal of success in the US and Europe. Another familiar face (to readers of this blog at least) is Marina and the Diamonds and my tip for topping the chart or at least coming in a very high position.
After listening to the songs from all of the nominated artists, I found another potentially good artist in the form of Daisy Dares You - which I'm sure was the name of the troublesome girl dressed in yellow from the ITV kids show ZAP way back when). None of the others had that instantly catchy tune but who knows what they are yet to produce. They have put Marina's new video Hollywood on her page which isn't her best song by a long way (still a decent tune mind) so perhaps the same is true of the other artists. Perhaps a project for Christmas is to check them out in a bit more detail to gain a more objective perspective.
In other news, dissertation is now done (for this section) and I handed it in this morning. Never has such a weight been lifted although I am yet to hear the feedback... I had some time to spare before the last of my lectures so I headed off into town to visit Poundland. Six quid later and I had two sets of fairy lights, some tinsel and some other bits and bobs and now we have a much better looking tree. The other lights were quite expensive and are battery powered so they don't last very long and aren't very bright.
Tonight ended with a trip to the pub for the quiz. I thought we had done quite well, 24/30 until three of the teams had perfect scores. Most of the questions were quite easy but our downfall was the picture quiz, naming famous doctors.
