Singles of the Weeks

I've neglected my single of the week again and so this week I shall have two. Coincidentally, they were both also released this week but as one was available from the album when I should have posted it last week, I can be forgiven. I shall start with last week's single from Pendulum. As I mentioned here, there are only a couple of songs from the album that I actually liked but the good ones aren't just good, they are incredible. It's a shame the whole album (or at least a bit more of it) couldn't have been like that but then perhaps the contrast makes them that little bit more special.

The song is called Witchcraft and is the second single taken from their third album - Immersion. The qualities that make this song so good as far as I see it are the clearly defined sections to the song and the clever transitions between the high tempo chorus and the slow downbeat intro that builds up to the crescendos before the verses. All of this on top of a great baseline and the unique electronic sound of the main instrument.

Second on this list is from I Blame Coco who has appeared as my single of the week before for her track with sub focus Splash. This time around, it is her new solo single Self Machine. I heard her play this when she supported La Roux on her recent tour and I've like pretty much every song of hers I've heard thus far. There have been a lot of remixes floating round but after listening to a few of them I think I still prefer the original version. Some of them just don't seem to work because of the way the song is sung making it hard to break up some of the lines - particularly the chorus lines that follow on from each other. The song itself though is very good and I'm a bit disappointed that she has pulled out of the tramlines festival in a couple of weeks. I haven't heard any news on a release date for her debut album either. Still, there are a good few of her songs rolling around out there at the moment to keep me occupied until it does turn up.
