This weekend has seen the Tramlines festival come to Sheffield. It is a massive event spanning the majority of the city centre and hundreds of different venues with hundreds more acts over the three days. More astonishingly, it is totally free and the only thing you have to contend with are the enormous queues bound to ensue from the thousands of people flocking to the city for the event.
I haven't got round to actually seeing any of the acts perform at the festival but I now have a good idea of the sheer scale this thing is taking. After finishing working the final grad week event - Pop Tarts - on a very limited spec due to having most of the equipment being taken by the Octagon for Mary Anne Hobbs' set this evening. Incidentally, she is retiring from Radio 1 and taking up a position as a mentor at our Student's union working with the media outlets. It was still a pretty good night and despite making some very silly mistakes with my programming, they were resolved pretty quickly and with a little help from the much more experienced stage manager, I discovered a quirk with the Octagon lighting desk that meant that some of the settings I had programmed were ignored.
Once we had finished our bit, we headed over to the Octagon to retrieve the equipment that was needed in the Foundry tomorrow. The Octagon is locked on a Sunday so it all had to come over this evening before 65 Days of Static perform at the end of the festival tomorrow. Being the generous sort that we are, we helped them with their out although I think we may have gotten in the way a little bit as well. As such, despite the extra crew (whether they were a help or hindrance) we left the venue at an horrifically late 6:30 am. That is the latest out I have ever done, even the carnival didn't take that long!
By the time I got home, it was 7am and I was shattered. Straight to bed for me and a repeat of Friday's bed is in order again tomorrow methinks!
