FOH and Mons

I remember being at the first TSC meeting not having a clue what people were on about when they were referring to FOH and mons. I now realise that FOH means front of house and that they are the people standing behind a large desk controlling the sound that the audience hear. Mons on the other hand is short for monitors and they are in charge of what the band hear out of their monitors. Makes sense when you know doesn't it. Anyway, today was all about how to set these two tech positions up and have a brief introduction to what the buttons and knobs on the big scary desks actually do.

Turns out there isn't actually that much to it. The reason that there are so many buttons is because there are so many channels and most of them are just repeats for each channel. Several of the knobs are for EQing and that doesn't leave much to get your head around. Not entirely sure what phantom power is yet but apparently it makes some microphones work. I plan to avoid doing sound related things but it is useful to know even if it is just to satisfy my curiosity and avoiding looking stupid.

Hopefully, I also will manage to remember most of the things I learned at this training session because we were made to draw pictures of everything. I say made - more encouraged and I really think it helps. There is so much information to take in at these things that having a reference point for it all is very useful. I might have to digitise my appalling pictures when I get a spare moment but that shouldn't be too difficult.
