Losing Touch with the Film World

It was the BAFTAs tonight (the film ones) and I decided to watch the ceremony. Often these events have some comedy moments in them and who knows, if I actually take any information in from them then it might be useful in a quiz someday. This year however, I was shocked to discover that I hadn't even heard of many of the films, let alone know which of the nominations I would want to win them. Normally there would be the exception of the 'not in the English language' films that would be a bit obscure and unheard of but even the big winners like the Hurt Locker, I haven't seen anything about that... anywhere!

Not only was I disappointed to find that most of the films were alien to me but the usually funny Jonathan Ross was totally off form that evening. Every other joke he told went down like a lead balloon and it wasn't just a tough crowd, there were really bad jokes but you normally end up laughing if everyone else does so it's okay.

About the only film's I'd heard of were Avatar - obviously, you couldn't really avoid that - and UP. Okay so that is a slight exaggeration, I'd heard of a lot of them but not the big winners - which are supposedly the better ones. I'd not heard of An Education but seeing the face of Carey Mulligan twigged a memory of seeing her face before - turns out she was in Dr Who and The Amazing Mrs Pritchard so at least I hadn't gone totally mad. On the plus side, the (in my opinion) huge flop that was District 9 didn't win anything so that means that I have some faith in the BAFTA judging panel to choose a decent film and I will go forth and watch the winning features and decide for myself what I think.
