So after last night, I thought I deserved a bit of a lie in, although I didn't expect it to run until 2pm! Turns out I wasn't alone however and I was joined in slumber by two fellow co-habitants which made me feel slightly better about my over indulgence. Sadly this extra long sleep meant that I felt ridiculously tired due to that strange phenomenon that induces more fatigue after a given period of time - which for me seems to be around the ten hour mark. That resulted in the rest of the day being given up to playing around with the website - for which I have now fixed and updated all of the relevant areas in time for its review later this month. I did manage to cross another assignment off my now fairly substantial 'to-do' list so at least now I can concentrate on everything else for a couple of weeks until the next one comes along.
I ended up reluctantly watching and being drawn into XFactor and thought I might actually enjoy some of the performances tonight as it was queen night. Sadly it was not to be and it ended up worse for that exact reason. Of course it very difficult to cover a song from such a huge and influential band but there is no need to get the lyrics wrong and in the case of Olly, he did just that. Don't Stop Me Now, I have decided, is my favourite song of all time and not only did he (or his mentor) choose this song to ruin but he decided to change to words and start "burning at the speed of light", something I thought to be impossible. As that was one of the earlier performances, I couldn't see the night get much better until I find out that it was Calvin Harris who invaded the stage with Jedward and to top it all off, he was wearing a pineapple on his head. These facts would not have come to light were it not for the magic of twitter which I now attribute to being the source of 60%+ of all of my knowledge.
I remember asking my Gran when I was at home earlier in the week how they knew train times etc before the invention of the internet. I'm still not entirely sure of the answer because she seemed to have lost her marbles slightly that night and couldn't remember simple words let alone recall information like that. It's weird being so reliant on one source for all of your information but that's the way the world is headed. If we had a mass powercut in the UK then chaos would ensue and we would simply be unable to function. Even if we just lost the internet a similar amount of panic would befall upon us and it seems crazy that we continue to store such important information in the cloud. Backups are now starting to go there with the thought that they are much safer in a server farm somewhere rather than stored locally but if people stop writing books and stop issuing printed materials then imagine the consequences if such a disaster did occur. Not that I'm trying to be all apocalypse and I'm certainly not in any way opposed to the growth of the net but it does strike me as illogical to carry on this way and ditch the old methods all together. What trail will our generation leave behind for the future inhabitants of our planet?
