Catchup

As a reward for my hard efforts yesterday I have decided to bestow upon myself the TV catchup morning. Well not so much of a morning, more of an afternoon due to my out of sync body clock. In this house it seems that the morning runs from somewhere in the region of about 7 O'clock for the early risers - cursed with the misfortune of the dreaded 9am lectures - to around about 2pm to 3pm. The day can then extend to the early hours of the morning - and does so more often than not. This suits me perfectly well as I see myself as more of a night person anyway.

Mornings and me never got on very well, even from an early age I hated getting up in the morning and found ways to stay up way past my bedtime. I know most young people don't like mornings but it would be nice if society could accept this. Perhaps in the future there will be no such thing as the 9-5 and in our increasing demand for a 24 hour society we might see new times for regular shifts. I can understand wanting to spend time at home with family etc and I know that it would be difficult to change things like schools and other educational institutions because their times are forced upon us but if working patterns do change then perhaps these will too. I suppose it would be perhaps harsh to force children to work during the night or when it is dark outside so maybe these places are best left as they are but I would love to be able to get a job where I start at 11am and finish maybe at 7pm instead of the boring 9-5. Surely it would boost morale and even increase productivity if the workers aren't so tired. What doesn't get factored in is the commuting time as well. I know from work experiences that it can take me as long as an hour to get into Birmingham in the mornings, and that's only about eight miles away!

Yet again, I digress. Spooks was the first call of the day thanks to the early showing of next weeks episode on BBC Three on Friday. It would seem I was right about Ruth's return to the grid from the snippet of next weeks episode. It is interesting to see how involved the home secretary is in all of MI5s dealings and I wonder how true to life that actually is. Does Alan Johnson and did Jacqui Smith get involved in intelligence briefings and secret assassinations? Somehow I can't see that happening in real life and I know that the story lines for these dramas have to be big and hard hitting in order to captivate the audience but it is nice to think sometimes that these things do go on behind the scenes. Obviously terrorism is a threat but it's difficult to believe that we (as a nation) are under threat from bombs and such like on a regular basis. Perhaps the fact that we are unaware of all of this means that they are doing their jobs properly.

Next up Merlin and Uther is blinded once again by magic, although this time his hatred of magic since last weeks events has driven him to take an even tougher stand on the matter. It bugs me how he can stand back and watch these events unfold right in front of his eyes and with his (albeit reluctant) blessing. Someone who has served him so well and for so long, who has saved his own life and those of his immediate family so many times can be sentenced to death on the word of a so called 'expert' that he is using magic. So what if he is, so far more good has come of it from evil and perhaps there is an exception to the rule that all magic is evil. But no, he is content to watch Gaius be executed even though Uther knew of his previous dabbling in magic and sorcery. As you may be able to tell, this episode made me feel a little bit angry so I needed something light hearted to cheer me up.

That great burden fell to Harry Hill in the form of his TV Burp and as usual, it delivered the goods. A good half an hour full of laugh out loud moments and I feel a lot better for it.

A little treat this evening, Back to the Future III was on ITV2. I'd forgotten how good this film really was and even though I knew the ending, it was still just as good as watching it the first time round. A really nice end to a gloomy day.
