After another late night last night, I was regretting arranging an appointment to see my dissertation tutor at 11:30 this morning. The last thing I wanted to do was get out of bed and the weather outside was grey and miserable and it couldn't even be bothered to rain properly - instead choosing to drizzle all morning. After resorting to the old 'roll onto the floor' trick to wake me up I managed to get myself ready just five minutes late which seemed to go unnoticed.
I received some good feedback from my tutor about my first piece of work, a plan detailing what I need to do for the next semester. Some issues were raised about my style of referencing, something I have been caught out with before. It's a problem when writing reports and essays because you can lose a lot of marks from failing to cite references correctly and having an incomplete bibliography yet there is very little time to practice as essay writing is rarely done in Computing. Other than that she (my tutor) seemed to think I'd got to grips well with the project and was making good progress. I wish I could say the same about the rest of the modules!
The afternoon consisted of two lectures and a late 5 o'clock finish, something I will come to loathe as the nights draw in but I can at least be comforted by the knowledge that I end on a high. The speech processing lectures continue to be highly enjoyable and I wish other lecturers would put the same amount of effort and enthusiasm into their lectures. Today we were learning how to decipher the International Phonetic Alphabet - those strange letters you see in dictionaries to help you pronounce the words. Trouble is, they are of very little use to anyone other than a trained phonetician because most people cannot decipher them.
A special quick mention for NMTB tonight, I thought Alex James did a remarkable job and this episode has been the funniest bar far this series. You cannot beat a bit of cheese related humour and Noel was particularly amusing tonight. I have a soft spot for very random comedy and drawing faces on fruit is guaranteed to get a laugh from me. Simple things...
