The Very Last of the Summer Wine

Today sees the end of one of the longest running sitcom in the world, Last of the Summer Wine. I wasn't an avid viewer of the programme but it became one of those things that you assume will always be there. Peter Sallis's superb vocal talents gave rise to the instantly recognisable voice of Wallace (from Wallace and Gromit) and he has somehow managed to stay in the show from day 1, throughout the 31 series and despite now being almost 90 years old. Because of his long term involvement, it was only right that he got the last word of the show that was not only funny, but summed up the show "Did I lock the door?"

I have also started reading Dara Ó Briain's latest book, Tickling the English which is a diary of sorts about his latest tour. He writes about the various venues he performs in, the surrounding area and the things that distinguish the personalities of the audiences from one another. He also describes some of his recurring routines that involve the audience: such as the 'have you ever interrupted a crime' routine. The book is primarily concerning the eccentricities of the English and how this compares / differs to cultures around the world (in particular, referencing his Irish roots). So far, the book has been very funny and a nice insight into how the British are perceived by 'foreigners' although I still don't consider the Irish as foreign for some reason, perhaps it's because of the proximity and linguistic similarity. If you are looking for something to keep you entertained for a long time then I would certainly recommend this book to you. Unlike a novel, you do not feel compelled to read it all in one go and in a good way, it is very easy to put down which makes it last much longer.
