All at Once

Moving days are usually a bit busy but today has been more so than usual. This morning all I was concerned with was getting my deposit cheque back from last year and packing my stuff up to go home. With that done, I was happily on my way down the M1, ELO playing on the radio until it happened. The closest I have come to having a road accident. In the microseconds that it took, I was convinced I wasn't going to make it out unharmed.

There was some debris on the motorway stretching out over all three lanes and impossible to avoid. I had slowed down a little to minimise the impact it would have on the car and carried on in the middle lane. In the left hand lane was a large lorry and in the outer lane, a white van which had decided that it could avoid the debris by moving to the middle lane - where I was. I was quickly being sandwiched between a very large HGV and a white van. In a moment of panic, I went for the breaks and the horn whilst swerving out of the way to avoid being hit. Thankfully, one of those options seemed to work and the white van moved back into his own lane.

I can't quite work out what happened here. Perhaps he didn't see me - after all a small three door Corsa in between those two giants. Perhaps he assumed I would just get out of the way (I don't know where he thought I would go) or maybe he didn't think at all and instead decided to just avoid the debris.

Either way, I think I'm very luck to have escaped unharmed and for the rest of the drive home I was still in shock about what happened. I have had a couple of close encounters before on smaller roads that usually involve me being in the wrong lane but never anything like this - on a motorway - at speed.

On a happier front, when I got home, things started to pick up a little bit. I checked my emails to find an email from IBM informing me that I had made it to the next round in the recruitment process. I now have to take an aptitude test to ensure that I'm good enough for them so here's to hoping that goes well. Also, a mere few hours after I stepped though the door, my new TV arrived and so my room is now covered in polystyrene and plastic packaging but I have a very shiny and very cool new TV. The remote is a little bit odd which is a shame because that is one of my pet hates (bad remote design) but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
