Disaster Strikes

Two house related hiccups today, the first came from a mis-reading of the electricity meter. I only discovered this thanks to a very helpful telephone operative who thankfully noticed that it was about 10 000 units higher than the previous reading that had been given by an authorised meter reader. We had one of those horrible old-fashioned dial meters so I'm not especially surprised that it was read incorrectly. It took me a while to get the hang of it the first time I did it and I have a feeling this was also done in a rush.

Unfortunately, the mistake wasn't realised until the house was left empty and everyone had gone home for the summer. Thankfully, one of the very friendly and helpful staff at the lettings agency have agreed to check it this evening and with a bit of luck, he will come back with a figure slightly lower than this one!

The next shock came from one of our housemates next year. He didn't quite get what he needed to continue on his masters course and will be graduating this summer. On the downside, we don't yet know what will happen with the house we have agreed to rent with six people. We are jointly liable for the rent in this case however as students we are required to find someone to act as a guarantor for the rent for these exact purposes. There is of course the other side of this story and it is also important to remember him so I will take this opportunity to wish him the best of luck in the future with whatever career path he chooses - and if you are reading this then make sure you keep in touch! If we don't find a replacement for you then then you can always stay in your room ;)
