LOST returns at last for the sixth and final series and despite the impending exam, I decided to give myself a couple of hours off to watch the first two episodes and episode 0, a sort of catch up episode to refresh my memory about what happened. Its just as well I did watch that as well because it made a couple of the themes click into place that had totally eluded me before. Despite the promise that there would be no more time travelling nonsense and that this series would be simple and linear, I can only assume that was some sort of inside joke or that I am missing something rather vital to the understanding of this whole series. From where I was sitting, there was a LOT of messing around - which is as far as I will go for those of you who may not have seen it yet.
One perhaps good thing to come of these first few episodes is that they have finally started explaining some of the more obscure concepts in the programme, starting with the smoke monster and revealing more about the elusive Jacob. Other than that we didn't find out a whole lot more, we still don't know what happened with the bomb at the end of the last series and the story seems to have somewhat glossed over that simply throwing them forward in time. Maybe they will go back and tell us, maybe not. As it is an American series, they have a bit longer than the customary 6 episode format British series to explain what is going on and tie up all the lose ends, which is just as well really because there are so many left hanging that the show would almost end up being a narrator sitting on screen for six hours simply telling us what happened.
My initial verdict of this series is that it needs more time before I can make an informed decision. Maybe after a couple more episodes I will be back into the world of LOST once more and have time to think about the mythology behind it all to work out whether they have actually given it some thought or just found a cheap route out.
