Jobs Fair

Yesterday evening I set myself a list of things to do today. Wednesdays are my day off so I should in theory be able to get quite a lot done. What normally happens however, is anything but that but somehow today seemed more productive.

The jobs fair was quite an interesting experience this time around - compared to last time when there were very few exhibitors relevant to IT based jobs. This time, there were the usual few - with the notable exception of Accenture who are normally at these things but with some smaller and less well known companies as well. I's much prefer it if it was all small companies to be honest because the chances of you not knowing anything about the big corporations is very slim and if you do want to find out anything you simply go to their website where they will most likely have a page for graduate recruitment. With the smaller companies, you also have the benefit of being in the minority when it comes to applying. Companies like IBM and Microsoft for example must get thousands of applicants each year so they can be picky and choose the absolute best slice. I'm pretty sure I will never fit into that category and it almost seems pointless applying, nevertheless I will undoubtedly do so just in case I get lucky.

There were a couple of complete idiots there as well, one student and one exhibitor. The student was studying construction and he barged he way to the front of the queue to talk to one of the technology guys on the stall. When he announced what he was studying, the look on the guys face was a picture, and in the politest way possible told him that he was probably in the wrong place. The other idiot was on the IBM stand, something I really didn't expect from Big Blue and when I went to talk to him, he seemed to be totally clueless. He asked me what I was studying - to which I replied 'Computer Science' and he asked me if that was to do with IT. Erm... yes? He then proceeded to talk to the booklet he had and then gave it to me. It was all a bit weird really, I should have waited to speak to the older guy.
