A Sleepy Friday

It wasn't an especially late night last night but for some reason, most of today has been spent in a state of semi-awakeness and I've been unable to concentrate properly on anything. This didn't bode to well for the impending speech assignment due at midnight tonight but I have managed to complete it to a reasonably level I hope. The premise of the assignment was to create a voiced/unvoiced detector for speech (voiced speech occurs when the vocal chords are vibrating). It actually worked reasonably well and once you get started using PureData it's actually quite simple and straightforward. There are a few peculiarities however and I am yet to discover how to generate a help file for the sub-patches. Bonus marks lost there then but seeing as this was another program where we received very little formal tuition, I don't think it was too bad.

As the next few blogs are likely to focus heavily on work, I will squeeze this weeks Spooks in now. More sections of the Nightingale plot were found this week when a group of extremist Hindus began plotting an attack again Muslims. Whilst this was the central focus of the teams investigations, they later discover another cell of Muslims who are plotting against the Hindus. Nightingale have operative all over the world promoting racial hatred and convincing the Hindus and Muslims to fight against each other. It is not until the end of the episode that we realise the scale of the events because not only are they happening in the UK, but all over the world. Ultimately this could need to a nuclear war which wouldn't be good for anyone. The conclusion of the series airs next week and will almost certainly end on a cliffhanger.

It is too early in the Spooks timeline for a nuclear war just yet thanks to the spin off show Spooks: Code 9 which depicts the year 2013 after a nuclear attack on London during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. It is uncertain however if the two time lines will cross due to the horrific viewing figure of the spin off series which has yet to be recommissioned. It would probably be the downfall of Spooks if in two years time the story does follow these events because part of the reason I think Spooks is so successful (as I have mentioned before) is that it is happening in the present day and some of the major plots and storylines are directly correlated with what is happening in the world right now, even if that is a huge coincidence.
